What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is defined by the International Dyslexia Association as a, “specific learning disability that is neurological in origin.”

It is commonly characterized by difficulties with comprehension and fluency, reading, and spelling.

Does reading feel like a battle at home or in school? The Orton-Gillingham approach has been used to teach many children to read effectively with success!

The Principles of Orton-Gillingham

  • Ordered: lessons follow a specific order, build on previously taught material.

  • Multisensory: visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic techniques are incorporated.

  • Prescriptive: decisions made on the needs of the individual student.

  • Diagnostic: lessons based on where the child is at in their current reading ability and mastery is the goal.

  • Explicit: direct instruction is used.

  • Flexible: freedom to change direction of a lesson based on the student’s performance.
